This guide will show you how to upgrade your ads to Expanded Text Ads (ETA). Expanded Text Ads introduce extra ad fields to Google AdWords ads to allow advertisers to put more information in ads. Support for the current ad structure will be discontinued after January 31, 2017.
Important: The process of transitioning to Expanded Text Ads is a one-way route, after the new Expanded Text Ads are created you can not go back to regular ads. Once you transition to Expanded Text Ads your existing ads will be paused in Google Adwords. New ads will be created that have the same content of the (now paused) existing ads. These new ads will be in ETA format.
Step 1) Find the ads you wish to convert to Expanded Text Ads
Pick your project in Channable and go to "AdWords > Build" for the dynamic ad generator you wish to convert and click "Upgrade to Expanded Ads".
Step 2) Convert the ads to Expanded Text Ads
Please note that the process is one-way and can not be reverted. Confirm the conversion by clicking on "Upgrade to Expanded Ads".
Step 3) Complete the empty fields
The ads are now automatically converted to Expanded Text Ads. For instance the "Description 1" and "Description 2" fields will be combined in one "Description" field. The "Headline" will be inserted in "Headline 1". The "Final URL" will stay the same and the "Visible URL" will be discarded.
Some fields are still empty, notably: "Headline 2" and "Path 1" and "Path 2". "Headline 2" is a required field: you cannot update to Expanded Text Ads without completing this fields for all ads and backup templates.
Once all fields are filled click "Save". We will now start the process of pausing all the current ads.
Notice: After this process is completed go back to "Adwords" and click "Run now" to upload the new Expanded Text Ads. After this is done your new Expanded Text Ads will be online.
Step 4) Fixing problems
Some problems may arise during the creation of the new Expanded Text Ads. The first problem that may arise is the inability to save the new Expanded Text Ads. This occurs when not all fields are filled for the new Expanded Text Ads. Check all backup templates and click on any backup templates marked in red. Fix all problems in these backup templates so you will be able to save the template.
Another problem that can occur has to do with the maximum length of the "Final URL". You can shorten the "Final URL" using tracking templates. Learn more about tracking templates here.
